Our guide Next Chapter Baltimore will provide insight to the cultural landscape and real estate opportunities in Baltimore. How you live is as important as where you live. We think your passions should lead the way. Next Chapter Baltimore is the guerilla guide to the good life in Charm City.

Baltimore has world-renowned museums and cultural institutions. For a smaller East Coast city, our contributions are impressive, and we prove that quality is more important than quantity. If philanthropy is in your future, consider becoming involved with some of Baltimore’s notable cultural institutions.

The Baltimore Museum of Art tops our list for several reasons. First, it has the Cone Collection, which has world’s largest holding of art by Henri Matisse, with over 1,000 works by the artist. Important Picasso, Gauguin, and van Gogh works also grace this world-class wing of the museum.

Recently, we welcomed the new executive director, Christopher Bedford. Notably, Bedford curated the American Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale with artist Mark Bradford. Impressive for any young curator, Bradford’s exhibition is scheduled to debut in Baltimore first before traveling to other museums.

One of our favorite aspects of the cultural landscape is the integration of the local with the international. The BMA regularly curates local artists’ work into impressive solo exhibitions.

Julia Marciari-Alexander is the first female director of The Walters Art Museum. The museum has wide-ranging collections of art and antiquities, from pre-dynastic Egypt to 20th Century Europe, including Old Master Paintings as well as material culture. The Egyptian Collection is a highlight. Hundreds of intricate objects comprise this wing including jewelry, statuary, and everyday objects, many of them carved from stone. The mummy that’s on view is mesmerizing.

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is a decadent night out. Not only are they an internationally recognized institution, but also one making history. According to the website: “The BSO made musical history in September 2007, when Maestra Marin Alsop led her inaugural concerts as the Orchestra’s 12th music director, making her the first woman to head a major American orchestra. With her highly praised artistic vision, her dynamic musicianship and her commitment to accessibility in classical music, Maestra Alsop’s directorship has ushered in a new era for the BSO and its audiences.

For other types of giving, consider The Associated or Catholic Charities, both of whom support a variety of charitable causes. Catholic Charities focuses on families, through initiatives like assisting people to secure housing, find stable jobs, and equip those with skills and tools to build a stable future. The Associated casts a wide net, mobilizing numerous volunteers within the community and allocating resources across the board, touching tens of thousands of lives.

In Baltimore, your efforts can have a big impact. Serving on boards and supporting these organizations is a smart way to link up with civic-minded intellectuals from all walks of life. Engaging with these networks can provide remarkable access to art and an enriching cultural experience.

4401 Bedford Place is coming to the 2018 spring market, to be listed by Rachel Rabinowitz. This French colonial style estate is in the Guilford neighborhood, a sprawling, historic area just north of Johns Hopkins and the Baltimore Museum of Art. The gentle curved roads and abundance of trees and landscaping can be attributed to Frederick Law Olmstead, who designed the layout with integrated parks and walking paths.

The home itself has space for many with 5 bedrooms and 5.5 baths. The historic charm is undeniable, with extra-large windows in every room illuminating the architectural details, hardwood floors, and 3 story, winding staircase, showing off those classic mansion bones.

Other fab features include 3 original fireplaces, updated kitchen and bathrooms, and a sunroom you’ll never want to leave. The home strikes the right chord balancing historic integrity with contemporary amenities.

A favorite feature of the home is the stone porch with built-in walls and benches, as well as a sleek, sunken fire pit. Gorgeous professional landscaping provides a private oasis. 4401 Bedford offers a picturesque canvas to make your own.
