Next Chapter Baltimore: The Gourmet

Musing over your next chapter? Sometimes a fresh start in an exciting city is just what you need. Whether you are returning to the downtown area from the surrounding counties, or perhaps Baltimore is a new destination, our clients engage us to make the transition seamless. We enjoy our role of opening doors and introducing you not just to real estate but also to the town. Our guide Next Chapter Baltimore will provide insight to the cultural landscape and real estate opportunities in Baltimore. How you live is as important as where you live. We think your passions should lead the way. Next Chapter Baltimore is the guerilla guide to the good life in Charm City.

The second installment of guerilla’s guide to the good life in Charm City is through the lens of The Gourmet. Some say picking your favorite restaurant is like picking your favorite child, and like any good East Coast city, Baltimore has a serious food culture. For this chapter, we are focusing on the Woodberry / Hampden corridor. This is just a snapshot of the food and beverage culture that Baltimore has to offer, and it’s a great point of entry into this expansive scene.

Baltimore has a spectacular culinary portfolio and Woodberry Kitchen’s Spike Gjerde put it on the map, earning the prestigious James Beard Award. Woodberry Kitchen has cultivated the farm-to-table movement from its inception, and has laid solid groundwork for the local food and beverage industry to flourish. Take a walk through the historic Clipper Mill (in the Woodberry neighborhood) to one of the local breweries, like Union Craft Brewing or Waverly Brewing Co.

La Cuchara, a Basque inspired restaurant is in a former London Fog Coat factory and is impressive in scale and execution. Every detail is taken into consideration, from the cider on tap, to the design of the materials of the bar (wood where your elbows might rest and stainless steel to keep your drink chilled). The food changes daily with the local market offerings, but stand out dishes from menus past include the duck leg confit and the sage scented bronzino served with beet puree and charred eggplant. Wine Enthusiast recently named it as one of the top 100 wine restaurants in the country, so definitely request the esteemed sommelier who moved from a high profile New York restaurant to be here.

A few blocks away in Hampden, find the brand new Baltimore Chef Shop, where you can partake in cooking classes that focus on professional techniques rather than recipe. Sign up for a fun date with the couple’s classes, bring your kids for the youth classes, or book a private event to host an entire party. A stone’s throw away is Dylan’s Oyster Cellar that has an enlightened bivalve and beverage program, showcasing the best of the Chesapeake region.

On the weekend, head to the Downtown Farmer’s Market. Find the freshest seasonal produce, artisanal goods, and a high yield of killer street food. Favorites include; the Hex Ferments stand that produces local kombucha and the most unique krauts and kimchi on the east coast, Neopol Smokery, which specializes in smoked fishes and meats and gorgeous cheese pies, and the falafel stand, which sources its ingredients from the produce vendors weekly.

For an old concept re-envisioned, visit R. House, a gourmet cafeteria. R. House’s concept is to be an incubator for the best of the best. Ten food counters host rising star chefs and give them the opportunity to test out their concepts with the flexibility of working in a cooperative space. Current vendors include Chef Munehiro Mori of Hilo who heads Baltimore’s only poké restaurant. Hilo hails from Wolfgang Puck’s Chinois in Las Vegas. For desert, try Blk // Sugar & Little Baby’s Ice Cream, a powerhouse duo serving up premium sweets.
